Support

Strong businesses are key to Sunniside’s success and there are a range of initiatives undertaken by Sunniside Partnership and its partners to support new and emerging businesses, whilst working to attract more new business to the area.

The Sunniside Business Forum provides an opportunity for the local economy to network and access support and updates from a range of external organisations including Sunniside Partnership and Sunderland arc, City Centre Management, Business Link, the police, the Sunderland Echo and Back on the Map.

Meetings are held every six weeks and give members the chance to find out about business planning advice, access to grants and updates on regeneration activity in the area. It also encourages businesses to talk to each other and identify joint marketing and promotional opportunities.

At present, over 40 businesses are represented at the meetings.

Following on from the success of Sunniside Gardens, £2 million public realm improvements are to be carried out along key routes linking the city centre to Sunniside. This will include pavement widening, better lighting and new, bespoke street furniture.

There are further, ambitious regeneration plans for the eastern quarter including new family homes and more state-of-the art business space.

Through the SunnisideASSIST project the Sunniside Partnership office acts as a point of contact and offers a range of advice to businesses and investors.

This project includes the publication of a quarterly newsletter and the regular distribution of details of properties that are available on the market.

The Explore Sunniside campaign was launched in January 2009 by Sunniside Partnership. It is an area-wide marketing campaign supported by Sunderland arc, Sunderland City Council and Back on the Map, which aims to raise the profile of Sunniside and increase footfall into the area.

The Sunniside Card underpins the campaign and involves a range of businesses, who offer a 10% discount to all card holders. To date around 15,000 cards are in use. For more information visit www.exploresunniside.co.uk

Other marketing activity includes new, easier to use street maps, street banners, regional radio and press advertising, Metro station posters and Explore Sunniside window vinyls. Businesses in the area are kept informed and encouraged to participate in the scheme.

Further activity will be rolled out as funding becomes available.
